We build Meta ad funnels for clients across the GCC, Europe, and India, so a new ad format from OpenAI is something we read the day it drops. OpenAI is now testing Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT: a paid, labeled chat with a business's AI agent that opens right after you click its ad. It shipped alongside a Shopify app and a HubSpot integration on September 16 and 17, 2026. If you run ads anywhere near Meta or Google, this is worth ten minutes of your Monday.
What ChatGPT's Sponsored Agents Actually Do#
Click a sponsored result in ChatGPT, and instead of just getting a link, you can open a side conversation with an agent working for that business. OpenAI says the conversation is "clearly labeled" and kept separate from ChatGPT's own answers.
It's currently running with what one report called "a handful of US advertisers." Not a public launch. Three things shipped alongside it, all dated to that same week:
- A ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store, live for US merchants, syncing product catalogs straight into ad campaigns
- A HubSpot integration letting any business connect a ChatGPT Ads account and manage campaigns from inside their CRM
- AI tools inside Ads Manager: auto-generated ad copy, auto-generated images pulled from a landing page, and headline rewriting to match a shopper's conversation
International rollout of the Shopify app, into the same markets where ChatGPT Ads already runs self-service, starts September 23, 2026. That access already covers more than fifty countries, including seven Middle Eastern markets and India, after a late-August expansion.
Does This Affect You If You Don't Sell on Shopify?#
Yes, if you run any ads through HubSpot. That integration isn't gated to ecommerce at all. If you use neither HubSpot nor Shopify, nothing here touches your account yet. Sign-up is still direct through ads.openai.com, and OpenAI hasn't said when other platforms get a native connector.
We work with plenty of service businesses that run neither. For them, this is a watch item this quarter, not a do item. The day a WordPress or custom-catalog connector shows up, that changes. It hasn't yet, and we're not going to tell a client to hand-feed a product list into an ad platform that could redesign its onboarding in eight weeks.
The Honest Trade-offs#
The upside is real. A labeled agent conversation is a genuinely new ad unit, not a repackaged banner, and the auto-generated creative tools cut real production time on the same kind of work our design team already does by hand for Meta ad creative.
The downside: OpenAI hasn't published a single pricing figure for Sponsored Agents. No CPM, no cost per conversation, no minimum spend. Testing with a "handful" of advertisers tells me OpenAI doesn't have a stable cost model yet either. There's also no attribution story beyond what the Shopify and HubSpot integrations report natively, so early adopters are trusting two young connectors to get conversion data right. I'd want a full reporting cycle before treating any number ChatGPT Ads shows as gospel, the same caution we apply to any new checkout surface Shopify plugs into.
How We've Already Adjusted Our Ad Builds#
We added a ChatGPT Ads line to every Shopify client's Q4 ad review this month, sitting right next to the usual Meta and Google budget check. Not a spend recommendation yet. Just a line, so nobody's caught flat-footed when a client asks about it.
The catalog sync runs off the same Shopify product feed that already feeds Meta Catalog and Google Shopping, so plugging it in is genuinely a five-minute task, not a rebuild.
My read: we're not moving retainer budget into Sponsored Agents yet. A small test budget, sure, once it's live in a client's market. Real spend, no. Not until there's a benchmark CPM and an attribution window we actually trust. We moved a client's budget into a beta ad surface too early once this year, before its reporting caught up, and I'd rather be a quarter late than repeat that mistake.
What Should You Actually Do This Week?#
If you're a Shopify merchant already running Meta or Google ads, install the ChatGPT Ads app, connect your catalog, and treat it as a small test line rather than a reallocation. If you run HubSpot, the connection is already live, so go look at what it shows you. If neither applies, do nothing and check back once the September 23 rollout actually reaches your market, especially if that's the GCC or India.
If you want a straight read on whether this is worth your time yet, send me what you're currently running and I'll tell you honestly. Takes me two minutes, no pitch attached. [cal.com/webepex/growth-review]
