Google's AI Shopping Update: What D2C Brands Do Now

AI performance insights just went live in five markets, with a YouTube shopping agent and checkout updates behind it

The short answer

Google made AI performance insights generally available in Merchant Center on 16 September 2026 for Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the US, alongside a YouTube Business Agent beta and Universal Commerce Protocol checkout updates. Merchants who clean up their product feed see a 5% conversion lift the following month, a fix that pays off even before your market gets the dashboard.

Google made AI performance insights inside Merchant Center generally available on 16 September 2026, alongside a YouTube Business Agent beta and expanded checkout tooling, all timed for retailers heading into the holiday season. If you sell through Google Shopping in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or India, you can now see how AI Mode and AI Overviews are actually surfacing your products, and there's real data behind why your product feed should change either way.

What Did Google's AI Shopping Update Actually Announce?#

Google's VP of Merchant Shopping, Ashish Gupta, announced three things on 16 September. AI performance insights in Merchant Center is now generally available across Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the US, giving retailers a side-by-side view of how their brand and products are being discovered against competitors inside AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Business Agent, the conversational shopping assistant Google introduced in Search earlier this year, is rolling into YouTube ads as a US beta. Eligible retailers can let shoppers ask product questions mid-video and get answers without leaving the ad. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration hub also picked up cart-transfer and checkout-testing tools in the US, with Australia and Canada following early next year. Tapestry, parent of Coach and Kate Spade, is cited as an early adopter already selling through UCP checkout inside Search, AI Mode, and the Gemini app.

The three pieces of this AI shopping update, in short:

  • AI performance insights: GA in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the US
  • Business Agent for YouTube ads: US beta, no published eligibility bar yet
  • UCP checkout tools: cart transfer and checkout testing, live in the US, Australia and Canada following early 2027

Does This Affect You If You Don't Sell in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or India?#

Not the dashboard, not yet. If you're serving GCC or European shoppers, the AI performance insights tab and the YouTube Business Agent beta haven't reached your account, so don't go hunting for a menu item that isn't there.

But the thing that dashboard measures (whether your product data is complete enough for AI Mode to recommend you) isn't gated by geography. Google's own numbers back this: merchants who adopt core Merchant Center feed best practices see a 5% increase in conversions the following month, and that's a general best-practice stat, not a beta-market one. So the real split isn't "affected" versus "not affected." It's "can measure it today" versus "should fix it anyway and measure it once the dashboard arrives."

What's the Catch?#

The upside is specific: in Google's own test with lululemon, conversational attributes (the extra product-context fields beyond title and price) got pulled into AI Mode recommendations 50% of the time. That's a meaningfully higher hit rate than I expected, and it tells you AI Mode is reading feed depth, not just matching keywords against a search query.

The catch: "generally available" for the insights dashboard means five countries, not global coverage. Sell primarily into the GCC or Europe, and you get the obligation to keep feeds clean with no visibility tooling to confirm it's working, at least for now. UCP checkout is narrower still: US only today, two more countries next year, everyone else unstated. "Eligible retailer" for the YouTube beta isn't defined either, so I wouldn't plan a Q4 campaign around getting into it before you've been invited.

How Is WebEpex Handling This?#

We pulled the source post apart the morning it went up and checked it against the D2C builds we're running. At WebEpex we audited three clients' product feeds this week against the conversational-attribute fields Google is now scoring in AI Mode: material, dimensions, use-case language, the stuff that usually gets left as an afterthought in a rushed catalog build.

None of our current e-commerce clients sell primarily into the five markets where the dashboard is live, so we can't screenshot our own share-of-voice number yet. What we did instead: treated feed hygiene as necessary work regardless of dashboard access. We build product pages for D2C brands with structured data wired into the Next.js page template from day one, not patched on after a Google update lands, and that's been true of every e-commerce build we've shipped this year. This announcement is one more reason it was the right call.

My honest read: the YouTube Business Agent beta and the UCP checkout expansion are the more interesting long-term bets, but they're US-first and not worth building a Q4 plan around yet. The feed work is the part with a return this quarter, everywhere, including markets Google hasn't switched the dashboard on for.

What Should You Do This Week?#

If you're a D2C or service brand running Google Shopping, spend an hour in Merchant Center: check whether AI performance insights has shown up for your account, and if it has, actually read the share-of-voice number instead of skimming past it. This sits alongside the Search Console AI reporting Google shipped earlier this month: treat them as one picture, not two.

Then, regardless of what you see, go through your product feed and fill in the fields you've been ignoring: materials, sizing detail, use case, anything past the bare title and price. That's the move Google's own data says pays off, and it costs nothing but time. It's the same discipline behind getting cited by AI answer engines generally: structured, specific data beats a thin listing every time. If you're not selling in one of the five live markets, doing nothing this week is a reasonable call, just don't let "nothing to click" become "nothing to fix."

If you want a second pair of eyes on whether your product feed is actually reading the way you think it is, send me your Merchant Center link and I'll tell you straight: takes two minutes, no pitch. [cal.com/webepex/growth-review]

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what people ask about Google AI shopping update.

Does this Google AI shopping update affect my business if I don't sell in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or India?
Not the AI performance insights dashboard directly. It's only live in those five markets as of this announcement. But the underlying product feed quality it measures affects visibility in AI Mode and AI Overviews everywhere Google indexes your catalog, so cleaning up your feed is worth doing regardless of where you sell.
What should I actually do this week because of this announcement?
Check Merchant Center for the AI performance insights tab, and separately, go through your product feed and fill in fields beyond title and price: materials, dimensions, use case. Google's own data shows that alone drives a 5% conversion increase the following month.
What is Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and do I need to set it up now?
UCP is Google's checkout integration hub that lets shoppers buy directly inside Search, AI Mode, and the Gemini app without leaving Google. The newest capabilities (cart transfer, checkout testing) are rolling out in the US only, with Australia and Canada following early next year, so there's no need to rush it if you're outside those markets.
Is the YouTube Business Agent beta worth applying for right now?
Google hasn't published eligibility criteria for the beta, and it's US-only for now, so it's not something to build a Q4 campaign plan around. It's worth watching, not chasing, until Google defines who qualifies.
