OpenAI turned ChatGPT into a paid ad channel with a face on it. On September 16, 2026, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Ads is testing "Sponsored Agents," a format where clicking an ad opens a separate, labeled chat with a business's own AI agent. Shopify and HubSpot are the first ecommerce and CRM partners plugged straight into it. If you sell online or run paid media, this changes where a chunk of your ad budget could go next quarter.
What Is ChatGPT Ads' New Sponsored Agents Feature?#
OpenAI shipped three things at once on September 16: Sponsored Agents (in testing, US advertisers only), a natural-language Ads Manager plugin for creating and analyzing campaigns from inside ChatGPT, and direct partnerships with Shopify and HubSpot. The Shopify app auto-syncs a merchant's product catalog and installs conversion tracking, live for US merchants now, expanding to other ChatGPT Ads markets on September 23. HubSpot users can build and track ChatGPT campaigns without leaving their CRM, backed by a limited-time spend match for new accounts opened by September 30. (OpenAI's announcement, ppc.land's breakdown)
It also lands one day after Google's own agentic-commerce push into Merchant Center and AI Shopping. Meta, Google, and now OpenAI are all racing to sit inside the AI-mediated purchase, in the same month.
Does This Affect Me If I'm Not on Shopify?#
If you run a Shopify store, yes, immediately: the app is live today and does the catalog sync and pixel setup for you. If you're on a custom stack like most of the Next.js builds we ship at WebEpex, not yet. There's no plug-and-play app for you, so the same tracking work has to be wired by hand into whatever storefront you're running.
If you're not running any paid ChatGPT campaigns and have no plans to, this is a "watch it, don't touch it" story for now. Sponsored Agents are still in limited US testing. Nobody outside that test group can buy the format yet, so there's nothing to set up this week even if you wanted to.
Where it does matter: if you already spend meaningfully on Meta ads or Google ads and you've been wondering where the next channel is, this is the clearest signal yet that OpenAI wants a real seat at that table, not a side experiment.
The Honest Trade-offs#
The upside is real. A labeled, separate chat thread for a sponsored conversation is a cleaner idea than stuffing an ad into someone's normal ChatGPT session, and letting AI adapt headlines to context (with auto-translation) is genuinely useful for a business running the same campaign across markets.
The parts nobody's advertising: OpenAI hasn't said how Sponsored Agent conversations get measured, what an advertiser actually sees from the transcript, or what the format costs. That's three open questions on a brand-new ad unit. I'd be cautious spending real budget against something with that much undefined before pricing and reporting even exist.
There's also a trust question baked into the format itself, the same kind we flagged when Meta asked advertisers to review AI connector permissions: a user opens a "sponsored" chat expecting a pitch, so the bar for that agent to be useful and not just a scripted upsell is high. Get it wrong once and that's the last time that user clicks a Sponsored Agent ad from anyone.
How We're Already Adjusting Client Ad Setups#
We reviewed the Shopify app and the Ads Manager plugin the day they shipped, the same way we treat any new ad surface before touching a live client account. At WebEpex we manage Meta ad accounts for service businesses, D2C brands, and SaaS founders across the GCC, Europe, USA, Canada, and India, and the test-week discipline we already run before scaling a Meta budget (small spend first, real numbers before a recommendation, no charge for the test window) is exactly what we're applying here before anyone's dollars touch Sponsored Agents.
For clients on Shopify, we mapped what the free app actually installs (catalog sync, conversion pixel) against what we'd normally build by hand, so we know precisely what it saves versus what still needs a human decision (creative, targeting logic, budget pacing). For clients on custom Next.js storefronts, since that's most of what we build, we sketched the equivalent catalog-feed and event-tracking wiring this app does automatically for Shopify, because that gap doesn't close itself just because OpenAI didn't build us an app for it.
We're not recommending live budget against Sponsored Agents yet. Not because it's bad. Because "in testing, US only, no published measurement or pricing" isn't a set of facts you build a client recommendation on, the same reasoning that kept us cautious on Meta's own subscription-gated business tools until the numbers were public. We'll know more once OpenAI publishes how the format gets measured.
What I'd Tell a Client Asking About This#
Don't touch Sponsored Agents yet, there's nothing to touch outside a small US test group. Do install the Shopify app if you're on Shopify: it's free, it's live, and catalog sync plus conversion tracking costs you nothing to turn on. If you're on HubSpot, the new spend match is worth checking against your September budget before the September 30 cutoff. Everyone else: keep this on your radar for Q4, and don't let anyone sell you a "ChatGPT Ads strategy" built around a format that doesn't have public pricing yet.
