Meta is changing what happens the instant someone taps your Facebook or Instagram ad, and the deadline to opt out lands in four days. Starting October 28, 2026, Meta's product browsing default goes live: a full screen, AI generated catalog page opens inside the app before people ever reach your landing page, your video sales letter, or your WhatsApp link.
It used to be opt in. Now it is opt out, by default, unless you act first.
What Is Meta's Product Browsing Default?#
Meta sent advertisers a notice, first reported by PPC Land on October 15, 2026, dated by third party sources to an advertiser notice circulating around October 14. It says product browsing will be added to existing Facebook and Instagram ads starting October 28. Tapping an ad opens a scrollable, AI generated page of products and prices before the advertiser's own site loads.
Meta already offered this as an opt in Advantage+ creative enhancement. The change makes it the default for ads already running. Meta cites an August 6 to 21, 2026 test across roughly 117,700 advertisers, reporting an average 3% lift in conversions, though MediaPost's October 16 analysis points out Meta never defines the metric or the comparison method.
Does This Break Your Funnel?#
If your ad sends traffic straight to a VSL, a lead form, or a WhatsApp link, yes. This adds a screen in front of it.
At WebEpex, we're running exactly this kind of ad this month: a search volume hook into a VSL with a WhatsApp follow up, aimed at GCC and Dubai prospects. That extra tap is a drop off point we did not design on purpose.
Who Benefits, and Who Should Worry#
Pure brand awareness or reach campaigns with no landing page to protect probably come out ahead here, maybe even helped by the reported lift. Lead generation, direct response, anything routing a pixel through your own domain, matters a lot more.
Two ways to opt out before October 28:
- Click "Opt out" inside Meta's advertiser notice itself, not inside Ads Manager
- Toggle product browsing off per ad inside Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings, which also works after October 28
Nobody at Meta has confirmed whether ads created after October 28 inherit the old opt in default or the new opt out one. That gap alone is reason enough to check your account this weekend, not next week.
The Honest Trade-offs#
The case for product browsing is real. Meta's own test, if the 117,700 advertiser sample holds up under scrutiny, shows a measurable lift, and an in app catalog page loads faster than most advertiser landing pages do.
The case against it is just as real. It adds a click between your ad and your tracking. It was announced through a LinkedIn repost of an advertiser notice, not a changelog or a newsroom post, and several media buyers, including David Herrmann, have said so publicly.
Nobody outside Meta has confirmed the opt out button's actual scope: one account, several, or a whole business portfolio. I would not call that transparent. Typical, maybe.
How We're Handling It at WebEpex#
We checked every live client ad account against this the day the notice surfaced, and opted every lead gen account out before touching anything else that week, the same discipline we applied when Meta's business terms changed and when Ads Super Burst rolled out.
For accounts running pure product catalog ads with no dedicated funnel behind them, we are testing product browsing on in parallel rather than flipping it blind.
At WebEpex, we build Meta funnels around one fixed sequence this quarter, ad to VSL to WhatsApp, never ad to Meta's own catalog page, for GCC, European, and North American lead gen clients. That sequence is the first thing we protect when a platform quietly swaps a default.
Small admission: we read the notice as advisory on one smaller account at first, not a deadline, and had to go back and opt out two days later than planned. Caught it fast. Fixed it. Still, that is exactly the kind of miss this deadline is built to create.
What I'd Tell You This Week#
Open Ads Manager today. If any live ad sends someone to a landing page, a form, or WhatsApp, and you have not opted out, do it before October 28.
If you are running catalog ads with no dedicated funnel behind them, letting the default switch on is a reasonable bet. Meta's numbers say so. I would not stake much on a 3% figure with no stated baseline, though.
Doing nothing is also a choice here, same as the UTM tracking gaps we flagged last week. Just make the choice on purpose.
If you want a second pair of eyes on whether this actually touches your account, send me what you are running and I will tell you straight, no pitch attached. cal.com/webepex/growth-review
